A New Chapter for Iona Opal Australia: Our Workshop/Showroom Build

Over the holiday break, my husband and I took on an exciting project that has completely transformed the way I work at Iona Opal Australia. My workshop, which had been semi-exposed on the verandah, was becoming increasingly difficult to use with the North Queensland heat bearing down. Working in extreme conditions isn’t ideal when cutting opals and making jewellery, so I decided it was time to make a change.

From Verandah to Fully Enclosed Workshop

For a long time, my workshop space had been functional but not entirely practical. Being on the verandah meant that while there was plenty of fresh air and natural light, I also had to deal with the challenges that came with being semi-exposed. The heat, humidity, and unpredictable weather made certain days almost unbearable for working on opals.

This wet season, we made the decision to build the space in, creating a fully enclosed, air-conditioned workshop and showroom. The transformation has been nothing short of incredible!

A Cool, Comfortable, and Functional Space

Now, with a fully climate-controlled environment, working with opals has never been more enjoyable. The air conditioning alone has been a game changer, allowing for longer, more focused sessions at the workbench without overheating.

Not only has this upgrade improved workflow, but it also means I now have a dedicated area to display some of my favourite opal pieces and handmade jewellery. Customers who visit can experience the beauty of Australian opals in a comfortable setting, with a behind-the-scenes look at the craftsmanship that goes into every piece I create.

What This Means for You

With this new setup, I’m excited to continue bringing you the highest quality hand-cut Australian opals and unique handmade jewellery, now with even greater precision and consistency. Having a more comfortable space means I can work more efficiently and explore even more creative designs. If you're local to North Queensland or passing through, I'd love to welcome you into my refreshed workshop and showroom!

This build has been a labour of love, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to create a space that supports my passion for opals and jewellery-making. I can’t wait to share more of my journey with you—so stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes updates!
