Andamooka Opal

Andamooka, in remote South Australia, produces one of the most distinctive opal varieties found anywhere in the world: matrix opal, where precious opal forms as an intricate network of fine veins within porous limestone host rock. Unlike solid opal that can be cut free from its surroundings, Andamooka matrix opal retains its limestone host as an integral part of the finished stone — creating a completely unique visual character found at no other field.

Andamooka matrix is typically treated through a sugar-acid or carbon process that darkens the limestone host rock dramatically, allowing the opal colour to flash vividly against a near-black background. This treatment is permanent, industry-standard practice and is always clearly disclosed. The result is a striking, earthy gemstone with bold play-of-colour and a geological character entirely its own.

Andamooka is also home to one of history's most famous opals — the 'Desert Flame', presented to Queen Elizabeth II in 1954.
