Our Story
Iona Opal Australia is a small, family-run business based in Tropical Queensland, built around a genuine passion for one of the world's most extraordinary gemstones.
Every opal in our collection is a solid, genuine Australian opal — carefully sourced from Australia's best opal fields, selected by hand, and worked in our own workshop before it reaches you. No doublets. No triplets. No mass production. Just the real thing.
Who we are
Iona Opal Australia is led by Iona — a Certified Opal Specialist and Professional Member of the International Gem Society, as well as a member of the Opal Association of Australia and the Australian Made campaign.
These aren't just credentials. They represent years of learning, hands-on experience, and a commitment to doing this properly — so that when you buy from us, you're buying from someone who genuinely knows opals and stands behind every piece.
How we work
Each stone is sourced from trusted Australian suppliers and miners, ensuring it's genuine, responsibly obtained, and true to its origin. From there, Iona works with every stone personally — whether that means cutting from rough, refining a pre-cut stone, or designing and finishing a piece of jewellery around it.
The result is a collection where no two pieces are alike. Each one reflects the individual character of the stone it's built around. When a piece sells, it's gone — it won't be remade or repeated.
Why it matters to you
Buying an opal online takes trust. We understand that. That's why we're transparent about what we sell, how we source it, and who we are. If you have questions before you buy — about a specific stone, its origins, its character, or how a piece of jewellery is made — just ask. We'd rather you go in knowing exactly what you're getting than be disappointed later.

MEET IONA
Iona is the maker, selector, and specialist behind every piece at Iona Opal Australia.
Working from her workshop in Queensland, she sources stones from Australia's finest opal fields and handles each one personally — assessing it for quality, stability, and character before it's ever offered for sale or set into jewellery.
Her qualifications as a Certified Opal Specialist and Professional Member of the International Gem Society mean she evaluates every stone with a trained eye. But beyond the credentials, it's a genuine love for Australian opal that drives the work — the colour, the variation, the way no two stones are ever quite the same.
Iona works exclusively with solid Australian opals and has a strict policy: no doublets, no triplets, no imitations. What you see is what it is.
If you have a question, want more photos or video of a piece, or just want to know more before you commit — reach out. Iona is always happy to hear from you.
