What Is Andamooka Matrix Opal?

Most Australian opals form as pure opal material within a host rock and are cut free from that rock. Andamooka Matrix is different. It forms as a network of fine opal veins within a porous limestone host rock, creating a natural pattern of opal colour threaded through pale cream to grey stone.

In its natural state, the colour in Andamooka Matrix can be subtle. But here's where it gets fascinating: the matrix is typically treated with a sugar-acid or carbon process that darkens the host rock, dramatically enhancing the contrast between the opal colour and the background. The result is extraordinary — vivid flashes of colour against a rich dark matrix, like looking at a night sky filled with colour.
