Australian Opals, known for their beauty and unique play of colour, are relatively soft stones, ranking 5-6.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Their hardness is comparable to that of glass, necessitating careful handling to avoid scratches or fractures.

Handling Precautions

To ensure your opal jewellery remains in pristine condition, it's advisable to remove it during activities that could expose it to potential damage. This includes:

• Physical Activities: Such as working out at the gym or engaging in heavy lifting.
• Outdoor Tasks: Like gardening or any activity that involves rough handling.

Water and Temperature Considerations

A common myth is that natural Australian opals can be damaged by water. In reality, solid Australian opals are non-porous and do not absorb moisture. These opals typically contain 3-5% water content, which is stable. However, this does not apply to Doublet and Triplet opals (at Iona Opal we prefer solid opal only.). These laminated opals can suffer water damage because the adhesive holding the layers together can deteriorate with prolonged water exposure. 

Additionally, it’s essential to avoid exposing solid Australian opals to extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold, as this can cause internal fractures or cracking.

Cleaning Your Solid Australian Opal

To clean your opal, follow these steps:

1. Gentle Cleaning: Use a mild detergent mixed with warm water and a very soft toothbrush or cloth to gently clean the opal.
2. Avoid Ultrasonic Cleaners: Do not use ultrasonic cleaners, as the intense vibrations can cause the opal to crack or fracture.

Storing Your Solid Australian Opal

When storing your opal, consider the following tips:

1. Short-Term Storage: Place your opal in a padded bag or display box to protect it from damage.
2. Long-Term Storage: For extended storage periods, such as in a safe or safety deposit box, seal the opal in a plastic lock-seal bag with a moistened cotton ball. This helps maintain the opal's moisture and prevents dehydration, which can lead to internal fractures.
