When I'm not immersed in the intricate and captivating world of opal cutting, you'll find me exploring the breathtaking beauty of North Queensland. Living in Townsville has its perks, especially with Magnetic Island just a stone's throw away!
Here are some of my favourite coastal activities and hidden gems in North Queensland that I think you'll love as much as I do.
1. Magnetic Island Escapades
Magnetic Island, affectionately known as "Maggie," is our go-to escape. A short ferry ride from Townsville, this island paradise offers stunning beaches, wildlife encounters, and serene hiking trails. Some must-do activities on Magnetic Island include:
- Horseshoe Bay: Perfect for water sports, swimming, and enjoying a laid-back beach day.
- Fort Walk: This historical hike not only offers a glimpse into WWII history but also rewards with panoramic views and frequent koala sightings.
- Nelly Bay Snorkelling: Explore the vibrant coral reefs and marine life just off the shore.
2. The Strand, Townsville
Back in Townsville, The Strand is a delightful waterfront promenade stretching 2.2 kilometres along the coast. It's ideal for a leisurely stroll, a refreshing swim, or a relaxing picnic. A great place for enjoying the sunrise over the Coral Sea, or winding down with an evening walk.
3. Paluma Range National Park
For those who appreciate a mix of coastal and rainforest environments, Paluma Range National Park is a perfect day trip. Just an hour's drive from Townsville, this park boasts lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and crystal-clear swimming holes. The hike to Jourama Falls is amazing, offering stunning views and a refreshing dip at the base of the falls.
4. Orpheus Island
A bit further afield, Orpheus Island is a hidden gem in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. It's a haven for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts. The underwater world here is mesmerising, with vibrant coral gardens and an array of marine life. It's a quieter, more exclusive destination, perfect for a peaceful retreat.
5. Exploring Hinchinbrook Island
Hinchinbrook Island, Australia's largest island national park, is an adventurer's dream. The Thorsborne Trail is a challenging but rewarding trek, showcasing the island's diverse landscapes, from dense rainforests to pristine beaches. Although it requires some preparation, the experience is incredibly rewarding.
6. Lucinda and the Hinchinbrook Channel
Closer to home, Lucinda is the gateway to the Hinchinbrook Channel. This area is a paradise for fishing enthusiasts, with abundant marine life and scenic mangrove-lined waterways. A perfect place to spend a quiet day, soaking in the tranquility and trying your luck at catching some local fish.
7. Mission Beach
A couple of hours north of Townsville, Mission Beach is a laid-back coastal village with a vibrant arts scene and beautiful beaches. It's also a great base for exploring Dunk Island and the Family Islands. It boasts a nice relaxed vibe, local markets, and the chance to spot cassowaries in the wild.
8. Billabong Sanctuary
Billabong Sanctuary, located just south of Townsville, offers a wonderful opportunity to get up close and personal with native Australian wildlife. From cuddling a koala to feeding kangaroos, it's a fantastic place to learn about and interact with a variety of animals. It's a great family-friendly destination and a favourite of mine for a day out.
9. Castle Hill
For a quick yet rewarding adventure, hiking up Castle Hill is a must. This iconic landmark in Townsville offers panoramic views of the city, Magnetic Island, and the surrounding coastline. It's a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike, and you can never tire of the breathtaking vistas from the summit.
10. Wallaman Falls
A bit of a drive from Townsville, Wallaman Falls is Australia's highest single-drop waterfall and an awe-inspiring sight. The journey through the lush rainforest to reach the falls is equally captivating. It's a perfect spot for a day trip, combining the beauty of the coastal rainforest with the power of the cascading water.
