Coober Pedy Opal

Coober Pedy, 850 kilometres north of Adelaide in the South Australian outback, is the opal capital of the world — producing roughly 70% of the planet's precious opal from beneath its red desert surface. The underground town, where residents live in dugouts to escape the extreme heat, sits above one of the most remarkable geological formations on earth.

Coober Pedy opals are celebrated for their luminous white and crystal body tones — a soft, glowing beauty that differs dramatically from the dark drama of Lightning Ridge. White opals display their play-of-colour against a creamy, milky base; crystal opals are transparent to semi-transparent, allowing colour to glow from deep within the stone like a fire burning from inside.

This collection includes white opal, crystal opal, and Coober Pedy's most extraordinary product — fossil opals, where ancient marine creatures (belemnite squid, sea shells) have been replaced by precious opal over 100 million years. Every stone is hand-cut and personally selected by Iona, a Certified Opal Specialist. Solid, natural, and completely one-of-a-kind.
