Queensland Boulder Opal, Koroit Opal and Yowah Nuts

Queensland's boulder opal fields — stretching across the remote outback through Quilpie, Winton, Koroit, and Yowah — produce some of the most visually dramatic and uniquely Australian gemstones in the world. Unlike other opal types, boulder opal forms as veins and patches of precious opal within ironstone boulders, and the ironstone is kept as an integral part of the finished stone.

The result is a gemstone unlike any other: part precious opal, part geological specimen, entirely extraordinary. The swirling rust, brown, gold, and grey tones of the ironstone matrix surround and frame the play-of-colour, creating natural patterns that no gem cutter could design or replicate. Every Queensland boulder opal is a miniature landscape of the Australian outback.

This collection also includes Koroit opal — prized for its intricate labyrinthine matrix patterns — and Yowah Nuts, rare self-contained ironstone concretions from the Yowah field that reveal an opal centre when cut open. All hand-cut and personally selected by Iona, a Certified Opal Specialist. No two pieces will ever be the same.
