Warranty & Fair Trading Policy
Workmanship warranty — jewellery only
All jewellery made by Iona Opal Australia is covered by a workmanship warranty in accordance with Australian Consumer Law. This warranty covers faults in the metalwork and setting, including construction, soldering, and the security of the setting.
If a genuine workmanship fault is identified, the piece will be repaired or otherwise remedied at no cost to you.
This warranty applies to the metal and setting only. It does not extend to the opal or any other gemstone once the piece has left our workshop.
Opals and gemstones — set and unset
Opal is a natural gemstone. By its nature, it can be sensitive to impact, pressure, sudden temperature changes, and environmental conditions. This is not a defect — it is an inherent characteristic of natural opal that all buyers should be aware of before purchasing.
Every opal sold by Iona Opal Australia — whether set into jewellery or sold as a loose stone — is carefully selected and monitored for stability before sale. However, we cannot guarantee the behaviour of a natural stone once it has left our care.
Opal gemstones are not covered under warranty for cracking, chipping, or breakage after delivery. This applies to:
- Loose/unset opals sold as finished gemstones
- Opals set into jewellery
- Custom-made and ready-to-wear pieces
Cracking or breakage of an opal after purchase is considered an inherent risk of natural opal and is outside our control as the maker.
Loose and unset opals
Loose opals are sold as finished natural gemstones. Once a loose opal has been delivered to you, responsibility for the stone passes to you as the purchaser.
No warranty is provided against cracking, chipping, or breakage of unset stones after purchase — including damage that occurs during setting by a third-party jeweller or through future handling.
If you are having an opal set by another jeweller, we strongly recommend using someone with experience working with natural Australian opal. We are happy to offer guidance on this if needed.
Inspection and repairs
If you have a concern about a piece of jewellery, please contact us at iona@ionaopal.com. Where appropriate, the piece may be returned to our workshop for inspection of the metalwork and setting.
Any repair or replacement relating to damage to the opal itself — rather than a workmanship fault — will be treated as a non-warranty service and quoted to you separately before any work begins.
Australian Consumer Law
Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure relating to workmanship, and to compensation for other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. Nothing in this policy limits or excludes those rights.
This policy does not cover damage resulting from normal wear and tear, accidental damage, misuse, third-party alterations, or damage to gemstones after purchase and delivery.
Questions? If you're unsure about the care or characteristics of your opal before purchasing, please reach out at iona@ionaopal.com — we'd rather you go in informed than be disappointed later.
