What Is Sugar Treatment and Why Is It Used?
Matrix opal, like this piece, features opal interspersed within its host rock. To bring out its captivating colours, the opal undergoes a sugar treatment—a process where the stone is soaked in a sugar solution, then heated in acid to darken the matrix. This enhances the opal's natural brilliance, creating a stunning contrast that showcases its radiant hues. The result is a breathtaking gem that’s as unique as the landscape it hails from. Sugar treating is only done on Matrix opal.
