Two of Australia's most significant opal fields sit within the same state, yet the opals they produce are so different that experienced buyers can often identify the origin of a stone at a glance. Understanding the difference helps you buy with confidence and choose the right stone for your purpose.

The Basics

Coober Pedy sits approximately 850km north of Adelaide and is the world's largest producer of white and light opal. It supplies roughly 70% of the world's precious opal and is the most commercially significant opal field on earth.

Andamooka sits approximately 170km northwest of Coober Pedy — 170km further into the desert — and produces both conventional opal (similar in character to Coober Pedy) and its famous matrix opal, found nowhere else in the world.

The Opal Itself

Coober Pedy produces primarily white opal and crystal opal as solid gems that can be cut free from their host rock. The resulting stones have a classic, clean appearance — a light or transparent body with play-of-colour visible across the full face of the stone.

Andamooka produces some conventional solid opal with similar character to Coober Pedy, but its most distinctive product is Andamooka Matrix — where opal forms as a fine network through porous limestone rather than as a solid mass. This matrix cannot be separated from its host rock; the rock and the opal are the finished stone together.

The Treatment Question

Conventional Coober Pedy opal is sold as-found, with no treatment required beyond cutting and polishing.

Andamooka Matrix is typically treated — most commonly with a sugar-acid or carbon process that darkens the limestone matrix and dramatically enhances the contrast of the opal colour. Visual Character

The two are visually distinct:

• Coober Pedy opal — clean, luminous, soft. The colour appears to glow from within a clear or white background. Classic opal beauty.
• Andamooka Matrix — dramatic, complex, geological. The colour appears as veins and flashes within a dark matrix, creating a more rugged and painterly appearance.

Neither is better — they're different, and the right choice depends on what appeals to you aesthetically. If you love soft, luminous, classic opal — Coober Pedy.
