The Queensland Opal Country Road Trip

Most people who want to experience Australian opal country think immediately of Lightning Ridge or Coober Pedy — the famous fields of New South Wales and South Australia. But Queensland has its own extraordinary opal landscape, and a road trip through Queensland's boulder opal country is one of the great undiscovered Australian outback journeys.

The Route

Queensland's main boulder opal fields fan out through the Channel Country and outback southwest from roughly Longreach and Winton in the north, down through Opalton, Quilpie, Yowah, and Koroit in the south. A classic opal country loop might take in:

• Longreach — Start here if coming from the coast. Home to the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame and Qantas Founders Museum.
• Winton — Dinosaur capital of Australia, with the Australian Age of Dinosaurs museum. Opal is found in the region.
• Opalton — A tiny settlement with a fascinating history as a major opal field in the late 1800s. You can still fossick here.
• Quilpie — The hub of southwest Queensland's opal country. Several dealers operate from here, and the region produces significant boulder opal.
• Yowah — Home of the famous Yowah nuts — small ironstone concretions containing opal centres. A deeply atmospheric, remote opal settlement worth the detour.
• Koroit — Produces some of the most complex and beautiful matrix boulder opal in Queensland. The swirling ironstone patterns of Koroit boulder opal are extraordinarily distinctive.

What to Expect

Queensland opal country is genuine outback — remote, hot (particularly November through March), and sparsely serviced. Carry extra water, fuel, and food. Roads between smaller settlements may be unsealed and can become impassable after rain. Check conditions before departing.

That said, the experience of driving through this landscape — the red earth, the endless sky, the tiny settlements built entirely around the pursuit of gemstones — is one that stays with you permanently.
