What is Crystal Opal? Australia's Most Luminous Gem Explained
When most people think of opal, they picture a stone with colour play across its surface — a solid, opaque gem that reflects light back at you. Crystal opal is different. It's transparent or semi-transparent, and the colour appears to float inside the stone, suspended in depth, rather than sitting on the surface. It's one of the most extraordinary things you can hold in your hand.
What is crystal opal?
Crystal opal is a type of precious opal that is transparent or semi-transparent, allowing light to pass through the body of the stone. The colour play appears to exist within the stone rather than on its surface — giving fine specimens an almost holographic quality. The stone can be any body tone from light to dark, and the transparency is what distinguishes it from other opal types regardless of tone.
A crystal opal with a dark body tone is known as a dark crystal opal. A crystal opal with a black body tone is a black crystal opal — among the most valuable opal material in existence.
Where does crystal opal come from?
Crystal opal is found across several Australian mining regions. Lightning Ridge produces fine dark and black crystal opal. Coober Pedy produces crystal opal with lighter tones. Queensland boulder fields occasionally yield crystal material within ironstone. The finest dark crystal opal from Lightning Ridge commands prices comparable to top black opal.
What makes crystal opal special?
The transparency creates a quality in crystal opal that opaque stones can't replicate — depth. When you tilt a fine crystal opal, the colour appears to shift not just across the surface but through it, at different depths within the stone. Some specimens look as though they contain a galaxy. The colour seems to pulse rather than simply flash.
This quality makes crystal opal particularly stunning in pendant form, where the stone hangs freely and light can enter from multiple angles — illuminating the colour from within rather than reflecting it from above.
How is crystal opal graded?
Crystal opal is assessed on the same criteria as other opal types — body tone, brightness, colour, and pattern — with transparency being an additional consideration. A stone that is completely transparent with strong colour play and a dark body tone represents the pinnacle of crystal opal quality. Semi-transparent stones with good colour are also highly prized, particularly when the colour shows across the full face.
Is crystal opal a good choice for jewellery?
Yes — particularly for pendants and earrings. The transparency that makes crystal opal so beautiful also means it requires a little more care in setting than opaque stones. A well-designed bezel or protective setting preserves both the stone and the light entry that makes it glow. At Iona Opal Australia, I set crystal opal with care for exactly this reason — the goal is always to maximise what the stone is already doing naturally.
